Shor carries a wide variety of buffs to serve different
finishing needs. Buffs made from softer material produce a higher luster.
Buffs made from stiffer material are more aggressive. A
compromise between high luster and aggressive finishing are soft buffs with many
rows of stitching (the stitching makes a tighter, more aggressive buff). It also
makes the buff harder and offers more control. Additionally,
the larger the diameter of the buff, the faster the outside of the wheel spins
(and, consequently, the faster the finishing).
| Another variable (beyond the buff material, rows of stitching, and
diameter of the buff) is the number of cloths sewn together to make the
buff. This is called the "ply". The larger the ply number, the wider the
buff. Buffs with few ply and lots of rows of stitching are called
"knife edge" and are use to polish crevices. Finally, the
last variable is the material that holds the center together. Choice of
center is largely a matter of personal preference, though it is true that a
leather center is more durable than a shellac center.
Shor Buffs are grouped by:
material (starting with the least soft) and by stitching characteristics
(loose, stitched or knife edge). Within these groups, the buffs are arranged
in order of diameter and rows of stitching. Midget (very small) buffs are
listed separately. Knife edge buffs and loose buffs are listed separately |
